AWS re:invent 2015 Keynote Announcements

Amazon Web Services re:invent is currently going on in Las Vegas. This morning AWS announced several new and upcoming tools in the keynote, lead by Andy Jassy. The keynote also included speakers from several AWS users, such as Capital One, GE, Splunk, and MLBam.

First up on the announcements was the new Amazon QuickSight tool, offering fast, easy-to-use, business intelligence at a competitive price. The tool claims to allow for fast analysis of data, fast queries using their ‘SPICE’ query engine, dynamic data visualizations, sharable snapshots, and integration with AWS data sources.

QuickSight will automatically discover data, inspect data types and relationships, and select the best visualization using AutoGraph.

Next up in the new tool announcements was Amazon Kinesis Firehose, allowing for easy load of streaming data into AWS. Currently you can route the data to S3 and/or Redshift, with new data sources planned for the future.

Amazon Snowball is a highly secure large data import/ export, allowing you to transfer terabytes or petabytes of data. Snowball aims to remove the potential user error from shipping large data, adding an e-ink kindle for shipping labels. It will allow you to ship data easily and securely, with tracking at all stages.

At the keynote, they announced they were adding MariaDB to the list of available databases. They also announced the addition of AWS Database Migration Service to easily migration production databases. The service will only take 10 – 15 minutes to setup and will allow for easy/ simple migration with a database of any size, allowing you to track progress of the migration.

Migrating from proprietary databases to AWS will be more difficult, therefore, with the Database Migration Service they also announced the AWS Schema Conversion Tool. This will allow you to migrate between databases easily and reliably, estimating the process should be 80% automatic.

This will allow you to setup rules for resources and assign actions if those rules are not met.

The most popular use case mentioned during the keynote was that if an instance was not tagged with an environment tag, a developer would be paged. Another use case was that if an instance was not within a VPC, terminate the instance.

AWS Config rules will come with pre built popular rules to select from, however you will also be able to create your own custom rules and actions using Lambda.

Amazon Inspector is an automated security assessment service that finds security or compliance issues. It will detect and remedy the security issues early on for you.
